Hair Loss After Breastfeeding: Tips to Reduce Hair Loss

Experiencing hair loss after breastfeeding can be quite concerning for many women, but don't worry - it's a common issue. Here, we will provide you with some helpful tips to reduce hair loss and maintain your gorgeous locks.

1. Understanding Hair Loss After Breastfeeding

Hair loss after breastfeeding, commonly known as postpartum hair loss, is a natural process that many women experience. During pregnancy, hormonal changes like increased estrogen levels lead to a longer hair growth phase, known as the anagen phase. This results in thicker, healthier hair, as hair shedding is significantly reduced.

Once you stop breastfeeding, estrogen levels decline, and the hormone prolactin, which is responsible for milk production, also decreases. As hormone levels return to normal, the hair that was in the prolonged growth phase begins to enter the telogen or resting phase. This change in the hair growth cycle can cause increased hair shedding, leading to temporary hair thinning and hair loss.

It's important to note that postpartum hair loss typically starts around 3 to 6 months after giving birth and can last for several months. The severity of hair loss may vary from person to person, but in most cases, hair growth returns to its normal state within 6 to 12 months after giving birth. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and practicing good hair care habits can help minimize the impact of postpartum hair loss and support hair regrowth during this period.

2. Tips to Reduce Hair Loss

a. Gentle Hair Care Practicing gentle hair care during this period is crucial, as harsh treatments can worsen hair loss. Avoid tight hairstyles, such as ponytails and braids, and minimize the use of heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands. Instead, focus on hair care at home techniques, such as air-drying your hair and using a wide-toothed comb or brush with gentle bristles to detangle your hair without causing breakage.

b. Nutrition A well-balanced diet plays a vital role in maintaining healthy hair. Consume foods rich in vitamins (like A, C, and E), minerals (such as zinc and iron), and proteins to support hair growth. In addition to a healthy diet, consider taking supplements to enhance hair health. In Australia, some of the best-selling hair, skin, and nail vitamins include Swisse Ultiboost Hair Skin Nails+, Blackmores Nails, Hair & Skin, and JSHealth Hair + Energy Formula. However, it's essential to consult your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen.

5 Hair Myths

Learn where the myth came from and what science tells us true.

Have you ever spread information. Without fact checking? Don’t worry we all do that’s why im here to bust 5 Hair myths that could be negatively impacting you and your hair.

Myth #1. You should attend your hair colouring appointment with dirty hair.

This is extremely wide spread and commonly believed. That is because back in the day this was valuable advice. Years ago the chemical in hair colours were much stronger and more irritating to our skin. This is why it was recommended to attend  hair salon appointments with dirty hair. This was believed to add an extra layer of protection for your scalp.

The times have changed and hair colouring products are no longer as aggressive on our skin.

Having dirty hair for your hair salon appointment will actually negatively impact your results in the following way:

  • Hair colour is far more gentle these days free from chemicals such as Ammonia, PPD and Resorcinol. This means that to penetrate the hairs cuticle and deposit colour we need clean fresh hair. Oil acts as a barrier making it harder for the modern day clean hair colouring products to penetrate.
  • Hair colouring has come a long way with techniques advancing beyond a few stripy foils and a root colour. With Highlighting techniques such as Baby Lights, Balayage highlights, Micro-foils we need clean fresh hair to achieve these intricate weaves. When hair is oily it clumps together this makes achieving that lived in hair or balayage look far more difficult.

Due to these obstacles when hair colouring your hair stylist may need to wash your hair before performing your colouring service. This will cost you extra money as well as your time.

What have we learned? Clean hair is best for optimal hair colouring results. Show up to our Hair salon with day old washed hair to save your self time and money.

Myth #2.

Trimming your hair will make it grow faster.

Technically no trimming your hair will not make it grow faster. Regular trims in your salon every 6-8 weeks removes split ends. By removing the split ends we are preventing them from traveling further up the hair shaft. Here lies the benefit to regular salon visits by removing the split ends we are allowing our clients hair to brow longer, thicker and healthier without breaking off. This indirectly results is hair becoming longer faster.

so no Trims are not technically making your hair grow faster but you should still have regular trims to have long, strong healthy hair.

Myth #3.

Hair oils are only for people who don’t get oily hair.

We get why you would think this but the truth is hair oils are used to bring oil through the mid length and ends of your hair not the scalp. This means its perfectly ok to use hair oils even if you get oily roots. Choosing the right hair oil is also important aim for a weightless Oil that provides defrizzing smoothing. Our favourite one in salon is the Original Mineral Frizzy Logic Serum. A Small amount on wet hair will leave your hair feeling smooth frizz free and shiny.

Myth #4.

Hairstylist try to sell products purely to make a profit.

Absolutely this one is a myth. Your hairstylist is a trained professional in the field of all things hair this includes but is not limited to some of the following –

hair colouring, hairstyling, hair characteristics, Hair care in salon and at home, hair science, hair trends.

Just like your favourite neuropath would do stylists take a holistic approach to identifying your personal haircare needs. This includes prescribing at home and in salon hair care. If you were to go to your doctor and they prescribed a script for medication would you get the same result if you simply purchased a vitamin from the supermarket instead? No you wouldn’t your problem would go left untreated. We prescribe haircare to give you the best possible results for your hair. If you choose to follow our advice great ! but if not your hairdresser can not guarantee that you will achieve your desired colour results. What does colour have to do with hair health? I hear you asking your self. Im gad you asked to achieve certain colours our hair needs to be healthy. Using incorrect products could leave your hair feeling dull, dry and discoloured. Moral of the story listen to your hairstylists advice you don’t have to buy a particular brand but aim for salon quality products to get the best results for your hair.

Myth #5.

I need to rebook every 6 weeks.

Hairdressing has grown and evolved so much in the last 10-15 years. Hair colours are tailed to each individual client. With bespoke colours and cuts comes personalised rebooking times as well. Time frames can range from every 4 weeks to 6 months. At the time of your consultation our aim is to find out as much about you and your hair as we can. One of the questions we will ask is how often would you like the visit our hair salon? Factors we consider when designing a colour for our clients are things like lifestyle, affordability, maintenance. We need to design a colour that suits how often you want and need to visit us as well as your budget.

Balayage is a great example of a hair colour tailored to a clients lifestyle. This clients wants a low maintenance colour that only needs to be refreshed from 3 to 6 months. In contract to this we have a client who has grey roots and does not wish to go all natural.

We can either use a foil technique to give our client a longer gap between appointments or we can agree on a global application is they cant stand to see a single grey hair. Each technique comes with an individual time frame on when is best to visit. Just like our colours we will tailor your appointment schedule to suit you and your individual needs.

TLDR( too long didn't read )

If you just want the facts without any of the fluff heres what we have talked about in our article.

Clean hair when attending your appointments is crucial for the best result.

Regular trims 6-8 weeks will stop your hair from splitting upward the hair cuticle. This prevents breakage and help your hair to grow longer.

The use of hair oils such as Frizzy logic will add moisture to your mid-lengths and ends and not make your roots oily.

Hair stylists are training hair professionals we recommend products to give you all the education and tools your hair needs to thrive.

Hair colours are individually tailored to each client we also recommend individual retouch schedules to suit your personalised colour, budget and lifestyle.
